Last night, England’s dreams of World Cup glory were shattered.
It’s hard not to feel heartbroken when the team got so close to the final. I think we all thought that maybe, just maybe, we’d make it all the way. But it wasn’t meant to be. Croatia got the better of us and the England team, not football, is coming home.
As we cry into our coffee this morning, we must remember there is a huge amount to be proud of. The team and Gareth Southgate did something that seemed impossible a few weeks ago. They lifted up a nation torn down by Brexit and politics and made us believe in them and dream of what could be.
We should be so proud of them and what they achieved. They got past Panama, fought good fight against Columbia and won, took down Sweden to make it into the SEMI FINALS!
The last time I felt this excited and passionate about football was during Euro 96’. Football fever infected us all and the whole nation united in their belief that England may win.
So while we may be drying our eyes today, there is a young team we can believe in, who are talented, determined and wear the shirt with pride.
When defeat comes we can either let us take us down or use it as fresh stimulus to do better and sail toward your goal.
This is why it has annoyed me slightly that some pundits think that ‘we’ll never get a chance like this again’.
I’m no football expert, but I think this World Cup has shown us that you can never predict what’s going to happen. At least we can all go into the next tournament with heads held high and hearts full of hope.
Here are some inspirational quotes to help lift you up after defeat.
What defines a champion is not winning, but rising after defeat
A man is not finished when he is defeated. He is finished when he quits – Richard M Nixon
Defeat should never be a source of discouragement, but rather a fresh stimulus – Robert South
Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end – Denis Waitley
You learn more from losing than winning. You learn how to keep going. – Morgan Wootten
Sometimes you win. Sometimes you learn.
The greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without losing heart. – Robert Green Ingersoll
